The Unexpected Ways a Big Raise Affects Your Happiness
  + stars: | 2024-01-14 | by ( Joe Pinsker | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Up and down the income ladder, people say more money would make them happier. When they actually get it, that isn’t always the case. Some people who have gotten big raises recently say the money hasn’t changed their day-to-day life or hasn’t provided them as much joy as the things in their life that have nothing to do with money. Others were hoping for a bigger raise or felt conflicted about making more money.

Should You Get a Lease or a Car Loan?
  + stars: | 2023-11-12 | by ( Joe Pinsker | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Shopping for a car is more fun than paying for it. Once you have settled on a make and model, there are several financial decisions to make: Should you lease? Should you buy? Where should you get a loan, and how long should it last?
The Fun Things in Life Are Giving Us Buyer’s Remorse

As the cost of having fun goes up, so do the odds that you’ll feel let down. Isa Jones paid $375 for a ticket to a local music festival, more than twice what she remembers paying more than a decade ago. “It’s like my happy place,” she said, justifying the expense.
Persons: Isa Jones,
The next time you’re googling how to correctly pronounce potable, cache, macabre or gnocchi, or gauging whether the U is silent in gauge, you can be assured of two things. You’re not the only one wary of butchering words. And waiting near the top of your search results will be Julien Miquel. Miquel, age 43, makes short YouTube videos that sound out English words, much like many other online instructors. But his work in the genre is distinguished by a curious feature: his conspicuously French accent.

Don’t just spend your time. We are born rich in time and then spend down our fortunes over the years. It may not grow like money in a bank account, but there are ways to get the most out of it. Researchers suggest thinking of time as something we invest—rather than "spend"—using our precious hours now for fulfillment and meaning that our future selves can draw from. Fran Caballero

More People Are Falling Behind on Credit Card and Car Debt
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( Joe Pinsker | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The share of consumers’ auto-loan debt that became delinquent rose year-over-year amid high inflation. Photo: David Paul Morris/BloombergMore Americans are having a harder time keeping up with their car, credit-card and mortgage payments compared with a year ago. The share of debt balances that became at least 90 days delinquent in the first quarter of 2023 was 1.08%, up from 0.071% a year earlier, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York released Monday.
Billions of dollars in cash are pouring into one of the most staid investments, the certificate of deposit, though many savers aren’t unlocking their full potential. Balances in CDs swelled to $480.2 billion in February, up from $36.5 billion in April 2022, according to the Federal Reserve.
Last year, after buying a municipal bond issued by the city of Kankakee, Ill., Kevin Roczey found himself hooked on securities that the market had long overlooked. The renewed interest in bonds is widespread, but it has come with plenty of hiccups. Individual investors like Mr. Roczey are rusty—that is, if they knew anything about bonds to begin with.
Life Is So Expensive That Price Nostalgia Is Now a Thing
  + stars: | 2023-03-15 | by ( Joe Pinsker | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
People used to talk wistfully about how movie tickets were $3 in the 1980s, or how a Big Mac cost a couple of bucks in the 1990s. Now they are nostalgic for the prices of just a few years ago. Russell Max Simon watched inflation play out in the cost of the avocados he likes to put on top of his breakfast. A 41-year-old marketing consultant in Rumney, N.H., Mr. Simon was dismayed to see their price climb from $1 each in early 2021 to $2.50 one year later.

But that's changing: Today's young adults, especially young women, are increasingly finding romance in their friend groups. In interviews conducted for our survey, young people told us that they found online dating too transactional. Trust is at even more of a premium when it comes to dating online. In a Pew survey conducted last year, 52% of Americans reported encountering what they believed to be a scammer on an online dating platform. In dating, especially online dating, women are bombarded with negative attention, harassment, or worse.
A Bankrate survey that took place from January 20 to January 23 asked about how a respondent's emergency savings compared to these savings a year ago. About 4 in 10 US adults have fewer emergency savings than they did just a year prior, according to the survey conducted by SSRS. But not everyone has seen their emergency savings fall from where they stood a year ago. "Many have resorted to tapping their emergency savings if they have it, or have taken on credit card debt, or some combination. And emergency savings is money of course that should be highly liquid for when and if they need to tap that money supply."
Some Everyday Investors Still Bet Crypto Can Make Them Rich
  + stars: | 2023-02-21 | by ( Joe Pinsker | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The 2022 crypto crash wiped out roughly $1 trillion in value and scared off many investors. But not all of them. A number of everyday investors say they are continuing to put their money into crypto because they believe digital currencies are their best chance at building significant wealth. Some 39% of crypto owners said last October that they would likely buy more, according to survey data from the Philadelphia Fed.
